How Much Does a Website Cost in South Africa? (2026 Guide)

It's the first question every business owner asks, and the hardest to answer in a single number: what does a website actually cost in South Africa in 2026?

The honest answer is "it depends" — but that's a cop-out, so let's break it down properly. There are really three ways to get a website, and the price and the risk are completely different for each.

Option 1: The traditional agency — R15,000 to R50,000 upfront

This is the model most people picture. An agency quotes a big once-off fee, you pay a deposit, and a few weeks (or months) later you get a website. For a large, complex custom build, it can be worth it.

The problem for most small businesses is the upfront risk. You're paying R15,000 or more before you've seen a single result — and, far too often, the developer goes quiet the moment the invoice is paid. When something breaks six months later, you're on your own.

Option 2: The freelancer — R3,000 to R10,000 once-off

Cheaper, and often good work. But a once-off freelancer site usually means you inherit the ongoing headache: hosting, SSL renewals, security updates, backups and fixes. That's a part-time job you didn't sign up for. And one-person operations are the most likely to disappear.

Option 3: The monthly subscription

This is quietly becoming the standard. Instead of a big upfront cost, you pay one simple monthly fee that includes everything: design, hosting, SSL, security, backups, updates and real human support. No massive bet up front, and nobody vanishing after launch.

Our managed website plans work this way — domain, business email and all — with no contracts and the freedom to cancel anytime. You can be live in seven days.

So what should you actually pay?

If you're a large business needing complex functionality, a bigger once-off build may still make sense. But for most South African small businesses — a shop, a guesthouse, a trades company, a professional practice — a professional site on a monthly plan is the sweet spot: low risk, low cost, and someone in your corner for the long run.
